Draw Anime Hair

Anime characters can be very fun to draw. One of the most important components of any anime character is the hair. You can create any look you want just by changing your character's hairstyle. Be warned though, because of the level of detail required, female hair can be the hardest to draw and can take years to master.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber eraser

Instructions

  1. Use Hair to Denote Femininity

    • 1

Place a light, horizontal hairline about one-third of the way down a female anime character's face. If you think it is too low, you've done it right. You need to leave room for bangs and the forehead.

    • 2

Create bangs with short, vertical lines or "Vs" covering your hairline and extending up to the crown of the head. In the front, the bangs should partially hang down over the eyes.

    • 3

Draw the longest part of hair from the crown of the head extending down to the shoulder of your female anime character. You can create shorter styles if you wish, but always start the back and side of the hair at the crown.

    • 4

Enhance a hairstyle with pigtails, chunky hairpieces, streaks of color or curly vines of hair. You can also accessorize the hair with barrettes, crowns or hats.

    • 5

Complete your look with intricate details in the hair, using vertical and sweeping diagonal lines to create motion and texture.

    Give Males Strong Hairstyles

    • 6

Create a hairline by drawing a light horizontal line about one-third of the way down a male anime character's face.

    • 7

Draw a male anime character's hair without front bangs. Instead, create a solid unit of hair that has bangs and hair in the back, but without a separation at the crown. In essence, there should be less detail in male hair.

    • 8

Create a shag hairstyle by drawing vertical lines from the crown down the sides and front of the character's head. The ends should be jagged and spiky to give texture. If you are drawing a villain, this can be especially effective.

    • 9

Give your character a wild style with spiky hair that juts up out of the crown of the head. You can infer motion by sweeping spikes back at a 90-degree angle to give your anime character a very comic book look.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use hair to cover ears (which can also be hard to draw), so consider using a longer style of hair when you're just beginning.
