Issues related to food, dieting and obesity can be very touchy subjects for many people. If someone you live with or care about is trying to get control of his weight through Volumetrics, you can play an extremely positive and helpful role in giving support to that person. On the other hand, it is just as possible that you may be a negative influence with a few careless words.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Compliment the person on progress without engaging in gratuitous flattery. The Volumetrics Eating Plan is polar opposite of quick weight loss fad diets, so neither you nor the dieter should expect to see dramatic physical change very quickly when the goal is to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week.

  2. Step 2

Suggest a walk, a casual game of tennis or some other form of exercise as an alternative to something more sedentary. If you are going to have a household conversation, there's probably no reason you can't walk and talk at the same time.

  3. Step 3

Learn about the basic concepts of the Volumetrics Eating Plan including the food lists and the "energy density" measurement in order to understand what it will mean for the dieter's meals.

  4. Step 4

Consider offering to prepare a meal or two using one of the Volumetrics recipes. You may be pleasantly surprised at the many delicious ingredients that are available and Volumetrics-friendly.

  5. Step 5

Respect the importance of what the dieter is trying to accomplish. Obesity can be lethal and, short of that, can be damaging to health and family life in a variety of ways. Let the dieter know that you appreciate the importance of what he is doing.

  6. Step 6

Get to a place in your personal thoughts about the person's weight issues where you are truly capable of providing support without being judgmental.

  7. Step 7

Tell someone who is on a diet that you are there to provide support even when his weight hits a plateau and he doesn't feel like he is making progress.

  8. Step 8

Share Volumetrics meals with the dieter.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you've tended to share household events around food such as pizza night or ice cream sundae night, brainstorm with the dieter to choose healthier activities.
  • Don't try to be the dieter's conscience. The person who is on the plan has to exercise his own control and judgment, and the most supportive role another person can play is usually to emphasize the positive rather than to try to play diet cop.
