Learn to Mine Effectively in Runescape

Step1
Obtain a pickaxe. You will receive one on Tutorial Island, but if you lose it, you can get another from the mining tutor south of Lumbridge Castle, or you can find one in the Barbarian Village.
Step2
Find a mining site. Search through the lands or click on the mining symbol in the player's map key. Some popular sites include the tutorial site south of the Lumbridge Castle and the areas surrounding Varrock.
Step3
Practice prospecting, or looking at the rocks, to determine what kind of ore they hold.
Step4
Highlight your pickaxe by left-clicking on it.
Step5
Left-click on a rock to mine it for ore. Alternatively, you can right-click on the rock and left-click to select the option, "Mine Rocks."
Step6
Take your full load of ore to the bank for safekeeping, or trade it with another player. You can also drop the ore on the ground if you don't need it and you want to share with others.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start out by visiting the mining tutor south of the Lumbridge Castle. The mining tutor gives tips and will give you a bronze pickaxe if you don't have one already.
  • You can get pickaxes from Nurmof the Dwarf, who lives in the Dwarven Mine. You can also purchase pickaxes in Keldagrim city, find them or trade for them with other players.
  • If your pickaxe breaks, visit Nurmof the Dwarf, and he will repair it for you for a small fee.
  • Occasionally a rock you are mining from will run out of ore. Different ores have different "respawn" times, or lengths of time it takes for more ore to develop in a rock.
  • If the head of your pickaxe becomes loose, you can reattach it yourself by left-clicking on the pickaxe head and then selecting the handle.
  • Some Runescape mining areas are dangerous, especially for lower-level players. To protect yourself better when mining in these areas, equip your player with a weapon, such as a sword, and use your pickaxe from your inventory.
  • Mining "smoking" rocks may cause your pickaxe to break.
