How to Play a Runescape Mage

A mage is a Runescape magician. Any player can become a mage simply by focusing on those quests and skills that will increase her magic level. Mages have many abilities and tools that make them valuable in combat, including healing skills.

Play the Part of a Mage in Runescape

1. Visit the magic combat tutor to the north of Lumbridge Castle.

2. Click on the tutor to hear tips on using magic in combat.

3. Choose the "Claim Magic Combat Tutor" option to receive 30 Air runes and 30 Earth runes.

4. Play the Rune Mysteries quest. You'll need to speak with Duke Horatio in Lumbridge Castle to begin this quest.

5. Speak to the Head Wizard to receive the Imp Catcher quest.

6. Play the Imp Catcher quest by finding or buying the four beads demanded by the Head Wizard and giving them to him.

7. Go to Rimmington, west of Port Sarim.

8. Speak with the NPC (non-player character) witch named Hetty.

9. Accept the Witch's Potion quest from Hetty.

10. Find the items Hetty requires and complete the quest.

11. Get a pickaxe. You can buy one, find one, trade with another player or get one from the mining tutor to the south of Lumbridge Castle.

12. Start mining rune essence. You'll need a great deal of this to make your runes.

13. Mine rune essence until your inventory is full.

14. Get a wizard's robe, hat, skirt, amulet of magic and a staff by killing wizards and imps, buying them from magic or general stores or trading them with other players.

15. Get a magic staff by buying one or making one.

16. Make an amulet of magic or of power to increase your points.

Tips & Warnings

• Get off to a good start by having the Head Wizard in the dungeon of the Wizard's Castle teleport you to a rune essence mining area after you complete the Rune Mysteries quest.

• Buy or trade for pouches before you start mining rune essence, as you can carry more essence that way.

• Becoming a Runescape mage can be very expensive and time-consuming, as magic requires several different objects to obtain high levels.

• You can claim runes from the magic combat tutor or range weapons (bow and arrows) from the ranged combat tutor, but you can't get both at the same time.

• You cannot claim runes if you have any in your inventory or in your bank account.
