Fighting in Runescape is more than a necessary skill--it is also something that you often can't avoid. Marauding goblins, giant spiders and masked highwaymen are just a few of the potential dangers lurking around the Runescape world. Learning to fight will increase your chances of survival, as well as your game play time. Fighting is made up of two skills: attack and defense.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tutors
  • Defensive items, like shields or armor
  • Weapon

Engage in Battle in Runescape

Step1
Visit the combat tutors located just to the south of the Lumbridge general store.
Step2
Left-click on a tutor to "speak" to her.
Step3
Choose either the ranged weapons tutor or the magic tutor with which to speak.
Step4
Claim free weapons from the tutor you choose. You can receive arrows or magic runes every 30 minutes, as long as you currently have none.
Step5
Speak with the melee combat tutor. He will instruct you on fighting with weapons or with your body, and he will give you a training sword and a shield.
Step6
Practice fighting with some level-one or level-two enemies. Level-one enemies include chickens, ducks, rats and spiders. Level-two enemies include giant spiders, cows, rams and randomly generated men and women.
Step7
Fight with a monster by left-clicking on it. Your player will fight with whatever weapon you are wielding, or with hands and feet if you are not wielding a weapon. Your player will continue the battle until one combatant dies.
Step8
Consider focusing on one fighting style at a time to increase your skill level faster in that style.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are several tutors in Runescape who offer tips and tools to help you fight.
  • You can only visit the magic and ranged weapons tutors once every 30 minutes, and you have to choose one or the other of magic or ranged combat items each visit.
  • Beginners receive a bronze dagger, which is a good weapon to start out with, on Tutorial Island.
  • If you are attacked by a creature with a significantly higher attack level than you, your best bet is to run away. Click on the "run" icon to get away quickly, but beware that you can run out of running strength. If you are still being followed by an attacking creature and find yourself running out of energy, you may have to turn and fight.
  • You cannot change your equipment once engaged in a fight, so be sure to equip your player with weapons and armor before going into battle.
