All males may go through puberty, but that doesn't mean that boys won't have questions. Proper education about puberty can help a boy grow up understanding more about his body and feeling reassured that the changes of puberty are normal.

    Teach Stages of Male Puberty

  1. Step 1

Start by talking about pre-adolescence, which is the first stage of puberty. During this stage, a boy's scrotum, penis and testes will remain about the same size and no pubic hair will grow.

  2. Step 2

Continue by teaching the second stage of male puberty. This is probably the stage the boy you are talking to will be in when he starts asking questions about his body. In this stage, the testes and scrotum enlarge and become textured, while pubic hair starts to grow around the base of the penis.

  3. Step 3

Teach the boy about the third stage of puberty. The penis starts to grow in length and girth and the testes and scrotum continue to grow. Pubic hair continues to grow in but becomes more coarse and curly.

  4. Step 4

Discuss the fourth stage of puberty. In this stage, the penis continues to grow and develop glans. The scrotum and testes continue to grow larger while the scrotum becomes darker. Pubic hair continues to grow, but does not spread to the full pubic area.

  5. Step 5

Complete your conversation by talking about the fifth stage of male puberty. In this stage, the penis has completed its growth and the pubic hair grows in the shape of an inverse triangle. Sometimes pubic hair will continue to grow and enmesh with leg hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • A good textbook can work wonders as a supplement to your lesson. If you don't have access to a textbook, consider referring a boy to an online resource like the Cool Nurse website (see Resources below).
  • It's best for someone of the same gender to teach boys the stages of puberty. A boy who is taught about puberty by a man will be more likely to stay on topic and will be able to relate more.
  • Boys aren't always the most mature when they hear words like "penis," so be sure to keep your composure when they laugh. You may have them do an exercise to help desensitize them to anatomical terminology.
  • Don't use your own drawings to show the stages of puberty. Using standard anatomical drawings will help boys understand their own anatomy more accurately.
