1. Ask her what types of engagement rings she is interested in. Chances are that there is more than one ring that your girlfriend finds appealing. Ask her what her tastes are when it comes to the ring and the band.

2. Find out what her ring size is. Your girlfriend may already know her ring size. If that is the case you can just ask her. If not you will probably have to take her to a jewelry store and get her ring finger sized.

3. Look at rings together. Actually go to jewelry stores with your girlfriend and look at engagement rings. Have her try a few of them on and examine her reaction to each ring. This will help you know which engagement ring is perfect for your girlfriend.

4. Talk about when the proposal might be. Give her the impression that the proposal could come on her birthday, your anniversary or a holiday. Let her believe that she knows when the proposal is coming.

5. Plan the proposal for months before what you two have talked about.

6. Buy the engagement ring without your girlfriend knowing that you've done so. If you share a bank account with your girlfriend than buy the ring with a different credit card or open up a credit account at the jewelry store where you bought the engagement ring

7. Stop talking about the engagement ring for a few days before the proposal. If your girlfriend brings up the subject just brush it off and talk about something else. If she isn't thinking about the engagement ring or the proposal than the event will still be a romantic event for both you and your girlfriend.
