Things You'll Need:
- Your natal chart.
-
Step 1
Acquire a natal chart. This can be done for free through numerous websites (see the resources section) or even drawn by a professional astrologer (this will likely accompany a fee).
-
Step 2
Find the Sun in your natal chart. It will be symbolized by a circle with a dot in the center of it. In the chart, the Sun will be placed under the rulership of one of the Signs of the Zodiac, as well as within a House. There may also be lines drawn from the Sun to other symbols of the horoscope that further modify its energy. Make a list of all of these elements.
-
Step 3
Understand the signs of the Zodiac. As you read each set of keywords to describe their energy, think of them as a mode of expression for your vital energies.
Aries: Driven, impulsive, aggressive, idealistic.
Taurus: Driven to have, security conscious, stable, slow, sensual, grounded, self-contained.
Gemini: Driven to know, curious, sharp, fast, witty, impartial.
Cancer: Driven by emotions, private, domestic, nurturing.
Leo: Driven by self-expression, proud, honorable, brave, pleasure-seeking.
Virgo: Driven to perfect, organized, serving, restrained.
Libra: Driven to connect, balanced, friendly, harmonious.
Scorpio: Driven to heal, intense, investigative, penetrating, transforming.
Sagittarius: Driven by truth, roaming, positive, lucky, unrestrained.
Capricorn: Driven by duty, industrious, purpose-ful, enterprising.
Aquarius: Driven to unite, eccentric, independent, socially-conscoius.
Pisces: Driven by dreams, mystical, idealistic, inspired, sacrificing, intuitive. -
Step 4
Understand the Houses. As you read the keywords that define each House, try to think of a House as an area of your life in which you wish to shine, or where your vital energies most express themselves. This is where you feel most alive!
First House: Being, the immediate moment, physical presence, individuality separate from people.
Second House: Material concerns, property and belongings, money earned, self-esteem, values.
Third House: The Mind, detailed knowledge, trivia, communication with others, mediation, the day-to-day.
Fourth House: Emotional Self, home, private dreams.
Fifth House: Self-Realization, pleasurable pursuits, performing, dating, creating.
Sixth House: Self-Perfection, work, health, service to others, daily minutia.
Seventh House: The Other, partnerships, marriage, business-partners, enemies.
Eight House: Transformation, sexual union, the occult, death (metaphorical), the values/money of your partner/culture.
Ninth House: Social Understanding, long journeys, higher education, cultural exchange, religion, justice.
Tenth House: Social Position, career, status, contribution to the world.
Eleventh House: Social Realization, friends, groups, humanitarian pursuits, attainment of aspirations, self-actualization.
Twelfth House: Spiritual Realization, removal from daily life, devotion to higher ideals, spirituality, mysticism, all of humanity. -
Step 5
Define the Sun. Using a generic sentence, combine the meaning of your Sun in it's Zodiac Sun with your Sun in it's House to create a statement that ultimately equals:
I am ________.
For example, the Sun in Taurus in the Seventh House could mean:
"I am secure in my partnerships."
Sun in Gemini in the Eighth House could mean:
"I am dynamic in transformation."
Similarly, the sign of the Sun could best be expressed in the realm of the House it is in.
That Sun in Gemini in the Eighth House could also mean:
"I am transformed when I learn."
Use your intuition to understand yourself through the keywords and archetypes. Remember, astrology doesn't define you, but you can use it its symbols to understand yourself in greater depth. -
Step 6
Understand the meanings of the aspects.
Conjunctions to your Sun mean that the energy of the other planet must also consciously be expressed in equal measure with the energy of your Sun in order for you to achieve your full potential.
Squares to your Sun mean that the energy of the other planet involved expresses itself at cross-purposes with your ego and vital energies. Consciously compromising between your ego and the energy of the other planet will alleviate this - unfortunately, this is probably something that must be learned the hard way.
Trines to your Sun means that the energy of other planet involved expresses itself in harmony with your ego and vital energies. The expression comes with such ease that you probably take it for granted.
Sextiles to your Sun mean that the energy of the other planet involved is best expressed in the context of a group. It is similar to a trine, but instead of the expression being instinctive it probably only manifests when demanded by circumstance. Awareness of the sextile can allow one to develop its expression consciously, however.
Oppositions to your Sun mean that the energy of the other planet involved is working completely against your ego and vital energies. Like the square, a compromise must be made between your ego and the energy of the other planet. When this is done, however, the expression of the energy can be incredibly powerful because it is filled with so much tension. -
Step 7
Understand the meanings of the other planets.
The Moon - "I feel." The moon represents the way we nurture ourselves and others. When its needs are met it is easier for us to express the qualities of the Sun.
Mercury - "I think." Mercury is the messenger of the Sun, and shows how we organize our ideas and also how we express them. Its energy brings speed, dynamism and intelligence, but negatively it can get too carried away and scattered, accomplishing nothing.
Venus - "I love." Venus is the emissary of the Sun, and shows what we attract to us (in terms of relationships and money) and how we can find harmony.
Mars - "I act." Mars puts into action the will of the Sun, and shows what we're attracted to and how we go about getting it. Its energy is aggressive, necessary for affecting the world. Negatively, it can be too war-like, and too much anger can lead to psychosomatic ailments.
Jupiter - "I grow" Jupiter shows how we seek to expand and grow our world-view. Its energy brings abundance, ease and luck for the purpose of expansion, but know that too much of a good thing can be bad.
Saturn - "I achieve." Saturn shows in what way we are or must be responsible. Its energy is often constraining and stifling, but only for the purpose of forcing one to mature.
Uranus - "I evolve." Uranus shows what your generation collectively thinks about and how it changes the culture accordingly. Its energy is unconventional, independent, willful and potentially disruptive.
Neptune - "I dream." Neptune shows what your generation idealizes and how it brings its dreams into reality. Its energy is dreamy, creative and mystical, simultaneously inspired and delusional.
Pluto - "I empower." Pluto shows the darker desires of your generation and how they are brought to light and healed in the culture. Its energy is unconscious, intense, controlling and obsessive, greatly increasing the desire nature to such a degree as to be destructive. Such extremism would hopefully lead to greater awareness and healing. -
Step 8
Put together the meaning of the planets with the meaning of the aspect to your Sun.
For example, Sun Sextile Neptune increases your mystical and artistic inclinations, but you probably don't manifest them unless circumstances demand you to use them. -
Step 9
Continue meditating on the meanings generated by all the combined elements of your Sun, and allow the understanding of your true nature to grow an evolve.
