Most children are very excited about wearing costumes, going trick or treating and sharing in the excitement of Halloween. Some preschoolers, however, become overwhelmed by all the stimulation. By making a few adaptations and encouraging their participation, the day can be fun for everyone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Don’t assume your preschooler likes wearing a costume. Many children don’t like the idea of wearing unfamiliar clothing. Pick and try on the costume in advance. Let the child wear it around the house to get used to how it feels.
Step2
If the child still is uncomfortable, go for something simple. A pillowcase with a hole for the head can be designed to look like almost anything-a box of cereal, a favorite character, anything you want to draw paint or magic marker on it. Slipped over the child’s head, over his clothing, his arms and face are free. Many children who won’t wear store bought or homemade costumes are comfortable in a pillowcase.
Step3
Late afternoon is the best time to take preschoolers out. In the darkness, everything appears spookier.
Step4
Don’t force a preschooler to go up to a stranger’s door and say “trick or treat.” It’s perfectly fine for a little one to stand back and just observe the older children. The older children then have an opportunity to generously share some treats with the little one.
Step5
Handing out treats to others from the safety of her own home might be more fun for a preschooler than actually going door to door.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remind the child that the costumes are all make believe.
