A consistent routine is key to getting a baby to sleep.

If you are having trouble getting your infant to take a nap, some of these tips may help. Of course, not all tricks work for all babies, so you may need to try a few to find the ones that will help your baby fall asleep.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your baby some fresh air. Going for a long walk with the baby stroller is often the best trick to get an infant to sleep. Make sure the stroller is positioned so the baby does not face you, as this may may be too exciting for the baby and keep him awake.

    • 2

Get your baby some exercise. A baby jumper is a wonderful way to get your child some physical activity that may exhaust her so she will fall asleep. If you don't have a baby jumper, just help the baby jump up and down with your hands.

    • 3

Fill his tummy, because a hungry baby may not sleep. Nursing helps your baby sleep; if you're not nursing, hold your baby close and give him a warm bottle. You may also use cereal mixed with her favorite fruit.

    • 4

Sing your baby to sleep. Rock the baby and sing your favorite songs. It doesn't have to be a lullaby song. Any song will do but try not to get them too excited or agitated; a Marilyn Manson song is probably not a good choice.

    • 5

Give your baby a massage or tummy rub. Both are excellent ways to relax a tense baby. Use a little lotion or oil. It's good for both of you to have a little skin-on-skin contact.

    • 6

Provide white noise. A sound machine or simple radio static can calm even the crankiest of babies. Try a hair dryer (not blowing on the baby) or a vacuum for noise.

    • 7

Put your baby down for her nap before she gets too tired. An exhausted baby can get very cranky, which makes it harder for her to get to sleep.

    • 8

Follow a consistent routine. Yes, babies love routine most of all. Put your baby down for a nap at the same time and in the same location each day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some of these tips can be combined. You can sing, rock and feed the baby at the same time.

  • A mobile or sound machine may be helpful if you are trying step #10.

  • I recommend getting the DVD, "The Happiest Baby On The Block" if you have a newborn.

  • Never use drugs like Benedryl, Tylenol or Motrin to get your baby to take a nap! This practice is dangerous and could really harm your baby. These drugs are useful for their intended purposes, but don't give them to your baby unless your doctor recommends it.

Have one that you missed. My daughter would drop right off if I gave her a warm bath and a baby massage with lavender lotion. Worked like a charm! Great tips for new moms
