Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- An open mind
- patience
- time
Step1
Get on the internet and do what you are doing now, RESEARCH! You must research and study everything in regards to your situation so you can have the best possible outcome. There are several sites including ehow, that helps consumers get a better understanding of their credit.
Step2
Contact the credit bureaus or an online service and obtain all 3 credit reports. A 3-N-1 isn't a bad option, but I recommend getting seperate reports from each credit bureau. Consumers can now get all three at no cost from annualcreditreport.com
Step3
Study your credit report to find any inaccurate items reported on your credit report. Check hard, sometimes they don't just appear in the form of an incorrect balance. There could be so many discrepancies wrong with your credit report. Check the date of last activity, statue of limitations, collection agency background, account status, etc. Over 76% of Americans have something wrong on their credit report, so do yourself a favor and CHECK HARD!
Step4
After you have everything marked, get ready to send in your dispute. Don't use a form located on the web, as these companies see these many times a day. Make it personal. Individually write your letter and explain every single detail you found inaccurate.
Step5
On collection agency accounts, send in a request to validate the debt. This request instructs the collection agency to send proof of the debt they are reporting and to cease and desist ALL collection activity until they have done so. Look up more information regarding this letter and its use on the net.
Step6
Wait 30 + 5 days and begin to receive your investigation results from the credit bureaus. You will receive mail from the collection agencies in some cases within two weeks of sending out debt validation.
Step7
If your results were not in your favor........dispute again! Keep doing this until you proved your case! If they can't abide, then sue!
