How to Make a Basic White Sauce

Making White Sauce is easy and versatile! Used as a base, you can make Creamed Peas, Scalloped Potatoes, Cream Soups, Cheese Sauce, Sausage/Hamburger or Chicken-Fried Steak Gravy!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • About 10 minutes
  • Metal Whisk
  • Non-Teflon Coated Saucepan
  • 1 TBSP Butter
  • 1 TBSP All-Purpose Flour
  • 3/4 cup 2% or Whole Milk
  • Salt & Pepper, to taste
  • RECIPE YIELD: 3/4 cup
  1. Step 1
    Butter melting

    Over medium-low heat, melt butter completely, but do not allow to brown or burn.

  2. Step 2

    Add flour and immediately whisk into the melted butter. Be sure to get all the edges of your pan. (Use a rubber spatula, if necessary.) The texture will be gooey.

  3. Step 3
    Milk added

    Add milk and increase heat to medium.

  4. Step 4

    Continue to whisk -- scraping the sides and bottom of the pan -- until desired consistency is reached.

  5. Step 5
    Creamed peas

    Other additions:
    Cheese (parmesan, cheddar, Velveeta, etc.)
    Browned hamburger, dash of Worcestershire sauce, and beef bouillon to taste. Serve over mashed potatoes.
    Browned breakfast sausage, serve over biscuits.
    Diced ham, chicken, or beef, serve on toast.
    Make a larger batch and add sliced vegetables for quick and easy homemade soup.

Tips & Warnings
  • TIP: Add more flour for a thicker sauce
  • Failing to continually stir this recipe will cause the flour to congeal on the bottom of the pan. Remove from heat if you have to step away during the cooking process.
