Tres leches cake--which literally means "three milks cake"--is a very popular dessert in Latin America. Following these steps, you'll have this delicious and moist Latin dessert in your fridge in no time! It may not be the exact genuine recipe from scratch, but hey, it's quick, easy, and simple and it doesn't taste all that bad either!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • White or yellow cake mix
  • Evaporated milk, 1 can
  • Condensed milk, 1 can
  • Heavy whipping cream, 1 pint
  • Rum, about 1/2 cup or to taste (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Fruit (optional)
  • Nuts

Step1
Bake the cake as directed.
Step2
To make the milk mixture, combine all three milks. You can also add rum if you'd like.
Step3
Once the cake has finished baking, allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes.
Step4
Using a fork, poke holes throughout the cake.
Step5
Pour milk mixture over cake, as evenly as possible.
Step6
Place the cake in the refrigerator and let the cake soak in the milk mixture.
Step7
When you are ready to serve, top it with whipped cream. You can also add fruit and nuts as toppings.

Tips & Warnings

  • If heavy whipping cream is too "heavy", it can be substituted with half-and-half or whole milk.
  • Suggested fruits to top the cake include: cherries, pineapples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries.
  • It tastes good even if you eat it plain, without whipped cream, fruits, and nuts...which is just the way I like it!
  • Don't poke too many holes in the cake. You don't want it to be a crumbly, mushy mess.
