How to Pray for the Pastor
The pastor of a church has so many responsibilities that the job can be overwhelming at times. Duties such as delivering God's message, leading meetings, visiting the sick, giving the church vision and leadership to expand on mission and spiritual growth of the congregation, not to mention other responsibilities to the denomination. The pastor's family often experiences his absence as he is serving. Here are some ways to pray for your pastor.

1
Establish a day and time weekly that you can dedicate to praying for your pastor.
-
2
Categorize the areas of a pastor's life that you can pray about such as physical, spiritual, family, church, and financial needs. Ask the pastor what specific request(s) they may have for you that week. Remember to keep them confidential.

3
Find Scripture that speaks to the prayer you are giving. You can look in the concordance in the Bible for topics, or do a search on BibleGateway.com. For example, under the "Church" category listed in Step 2, pray Hebrews 6:10, which reads, "God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them." You can insert your pastor's name in the verse where applicable. (i.e., he will not forget Pastor Smith's work and the love Pastor Smith has shown him...)

4
Pray with your pastor before every church service. Pray that God will use him mightily. Pray that the words the pastor uses will be God's words. Pray for his safety and protection against spiritual battles as he leads the service. Pray that your pastor will be used as a tool to bring someone to Christ.

Tips & Warnings
Follow up with your pastor asking how God is answering the prayers. Celebrate the answers.
Encourage others to join you in supporting the pastor in prayer. Meet weekly to pray. Remind everyone of the confidentiality agreement. Share only what the pastor has given permission to be shared.
Send encouraging cards to the pastor with Scripture verses you are praying for them.
If you are a different gender than the pastor, never get into a compromising position with the pastor-even if it is totally innocent, be aware of how it may look.
Never share confidences with another that the pastor has shared with you. This could easily cause division in a church or do other damage.

As a man, I would encourage the men in the church to hold the pastor up in prayer and step up to serve in capacities that the pastor may feel he is alone in doing. Godly women are a precious resource to a pastor but to have Godly men in the lead strengthens that bond with the pastor. Very good article! -

I'm not sure that my pastor has time to pray with me before every service, but I certainly am willing to pray for him! Good idea! -

Excellent article! Five Star! (If I can figure out how to do the star ratings, I'll give it that, too!) God bless you!
