It's delicious, nutritious and inexpensive -and according to testimonials from folks who've tried it, it's the best macaroni and cheese going. It's so easy even a bachelor (like me) can make it!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 bowl pasta.
  • 8 oz. bag shredded sharp cheddar cheese.
  • 3/4 cup unsugared rice or corn cereal.
  • 3-4 tablespoonsful butter.
  • 2-3 teaspoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • red pepper (optional)
  • black pepper (optional)
  • pot for boiling water.
  • strainer/colander
  • aluminum foil or oven-safe casserole pan
  • stirring spoon

Step1
.... start out with these ..... These steps will yield two servings. Adjust upward or downward as your needs require. Add a half teaspoon salt to a pot 1/2 full of water, and start boiling. Fill one bowl 3/4-full with dry pasta. For fun, I like to mix different kinds - shells, rotini, elbows, etc.! Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Take 3-4 hands full of unsugared cereal and crunch it up in a paper towel. (Some of my favorites: Corn or Rice Chex, Crispix, Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes.) Add pasta when water comes to full boil. Stir periodically.
Step2
..... mix it all up and put it in the oven .... When pasta is ready (usually about 10 minutes) drain it, and place a single layer on a sheet of aluminum foil, or oven safe casserole dish, adding some butter. Add a layer of cheese, a few drops of milk then some of your crushed cereal. Keep repeating this until you're out of ingredients - stir it all up to get a nice blend/consistency.
Step3
.... and prepare to feast on the end result! Place the food in the pre-heated oven for about 10 minutes, or until cheese is consistently melted. Dish it out, and enjoy- yum yum!

Tips & Warnings

  • A dash of salt, black pepper and or red pepper can used for added zing.
  • Bread crumbs can substitute for cereal, if necessary; but results are better with the cereal.
  • You may want to experiment with ingredient quantities. More butter will give your mac mix a creamier texture.

  • Too much milk will drain to the bottom.
  • Using aluminum foil in lieu of a casserole dish will cut down on clean up detail.

on 11/21/2007 Might try this without the cereal or breadcrumbs. I'm a mac and cheese purist, I reckon.
