If you find yourself out in the wilderness, you can't make hardtack in a more primitive fashion than this! Here is an alternative method to creating damper bread which helps eliminate the problem of your bread getting burned.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • a bag of flour
  • water
  • a clean straight stick
  • a campfire
  • golden honey (optional)
Step1
Using your finger or a clean stick, make a pit right in your bag of flour.
Step2
Add water and stir it around gently until a ball of flour forms around the stick. When the ball starts moving in the opposite direction, remove it from your bag. You may need to repeat this step once or twice until you get the volume of dough that you want.
Step3
Knead the dough and wrap it in a spiral fashion around the end of your stick, covering up as much of the stick as you want. Leave enough length so that you can hold the stick in your hand over the fire.
Step4
Bake your bread by holding it and turning it over the fire. When it is golden brown, remove it and allow it to cool. You can eat it off the stick itself or remove it from the stick and pour golden honey into the opening (optional).

Tips & Warnings

  • This recipe is intended for those who are "stuck" on the trail with little left to make food with. If you happen to have other bread-making ingredients, it would make your hardtack taste a lot better!
  • This bread is always better if you can spread some honey or jelly on it!
  • This bread is best eaten the day it is made.
  • This bread alone is not a nutritious meal and is not intended to substitute for a real meal on the trail.
  • Any use of fire should be done with extreme caution and should be supervised by an adult.
