This is a very popular and useful knot to learn if (and when) you need to connect two ropes which are each two different thicknesses. Length of the ropes does not matter as long as you have enough to make the knot.
Hold the thicker rope in your left hand and the thinner rope in your right hand. Fold back the end of the thick rope so that it forms a horseshoe shape, called a "bight".
Step2
Pass the thinner rope through the bight from below.
Step3
This can be the most confusing part!
Wrap the thinner rope around the thicker rope by passing it underneath the thicker rope.
Step4
Pass the end of the thinner rope back underneath itself at the point where it passes up through the loop of the larger rope. Make sure that both of the rope ends are on the same side, and pull it tight!
Tips & Warnings
Always test the strength of your knot before using it to prevent accidents which could cause bodily injury and/or property damage!
This knot can come untied easily if it is not first pulled fully tight!
