Take Care of a Stomach Flu

Headaches, body aches, chills, fever, diarrhea and/or vomiting, nausea...these are all symptoms of the stomach flu. If you have body aches and are still sick with diarrhea after 2 days, they are tell-tale signs of a stomach flu and not food poisoning. As an person experienced with this illness (I've caught it 4 times in the last 2 years!), I can give you tips on how to best take care of yourself when you're sick with the stomach flu.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rest
  • Fluids (e.g. water, Gatorade)
  • Pepto Bismo
  • Pain killer (an acetaminophen like Tylenol is best)
  1. Step 1

    See a DOCTOR.

It is important to see a doctor when possible, especially if this is your first time fighting this type of illness. Sometimes, you may need antibiotics prescribed. And follow your doctor's orders as best you can.

  2. Step 2

    Drink lots of FLUIDS.

When you have diarrhea or are vomiting, your body is easily susceptible to dehydration. Obviously, water will help rehydrate your body, but GATORADE is also a great way to replenish your fluids. It has flavor so you won't get sick of only drinking water and the ELECTROLYTES will give you some energy, especially if you aren't eating much and it's hard to keep food in your system.

  3. Step 3

    Eat SIMPLE meals.

Eat potatoes, rice, porridge, crackers, bread. Simple starches will help clear your digestive system. You don't want to eat anything heavy to upset your stomach even more. It may be hard to follow such a strict diet, but if you don't, it will be a painful couple of days, trust me.

Clear liquids will help, too. Try chicken broth or chicken noodle soup.

  4. Step 4

Go to the BATHROOM as often as you need to. Don't hold anything back. It is your body's way of excreting wastes and toxins. The faster you get rid of the virus, the sooner you recover.

  5. Step 5

Most importantly, get lots of REST.

Any time you are sick, your body is telling you to slow down and rest up so that it can carry on the fight internally.

Tips & Warnings
  • During the first few days of catching the stomach flu, you will experience body aches and headaches. If it is unbearable, taking an Acetaminophen pain reliever like Tylenol will help.
  • You will also experience peristalsis, which causes stomach aches or cramps. Pepto Bismol will aid in relieving the pains a bit.
  • An anti-diarrheal such as Immodium may help with the diarrhea.
  • Do NOT consume dairy or greasy or spicy foods. These will only upset your stomach even more.
  • CONSULT A DOCTOR before taking too many different kinds of medications. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS on the medication box or bottle.
  • You can be highly CONTAGIOUS. Be sure not to share food or utensils with anyone. According to the CDC, you should not prepare food while you are exhibiting symptoms and at least 3 days following your recovery. You can easily pass it on through food (it really happens...a handful of my co-workers and I have caught it from a catered meal before).

on 3/23/2009 Two things I have tried that I know for sure will work for heading off a virus. 1) My doctor told me several years ago that as soon as you feel the first symptoms of a virus, immediately start taking pepto bismol as it's directed on the bottle. She said the bismuth coats the virus germs and they pass through your system without making you sick. 2) A couple of Mexican guys I used to work with convinced me to try taking 2-4 cayenne pepper pills at the onset of a virus. You can find them at almost any vitamin/supplement display. They said it kills the virus germs. I was sort of worried at first, I won't lie, I have a very sensative stomach. But, I tried it and it worked. I'd recommend the pepto first though ;).

on 4/27/2008 Pepto makes me feel worse, the immodium is good though. I recommend a syrup called Emetrol for nausea. It's safe even for kids and morning sickness and it works great! Also tastes good too and you can find it OTC just about anywhere.

on 2/27/2008 Be certain to go to the doctor if it last for more than the norm, especially if you've been out of the country as you can get parasites in your stomach.
