Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Love for shopping
- Ability to negotiate
Step1
Be prepared. Know the difference between 18, 22, and 24 carat gold. Websites like gold.org should be able to assist you with the basics so you know what you want.
Step2
Set your prices. You can spend as little as 100.00 USD to infinitum on gold jewerly at the souks, as the selection is unlike any other in the world. Know what you want to buy and how much you are willing to spend before shopping! Also, be keen on the exchange rate from your home currency to United Arabic Dirhams by checking online or at your hotel.
Step3
Select your pieces. As English is spoken everywhere in Dubai, salespeople can be helpful. Only go to reputable shops and avoid dealing with "salespeople" who greet you on the street. They may not have genuine merchandise.
Step4
Once you have you pieces selected and prices figured out, it's time to negotiate! Most shops will offer a price that you can counter, as much as 30 percent. Remember that if you buy more than one piece you will have more bargaining power. But be flexible: if those earrings are really perfect for Mom and the price is in your ballpark you should concede. Negotiations are an art, not a science!
