Writing a newsletter on a regular basis is a great way to keep people returning to your website. Newsletters are also sometimes called ezines, and publishing a newsletter is also known as email marketing There are many tools and resources that show you how to write a newsletter (see below) There are many sites that will allow you to publish your newsletter or ezine for free

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Writing a newsletter is a bit difficult not to do yourself, I admit. What I mean is that you can find many Perl/CGI scripts that allow you to run a newsletter, including subscribe and unsubscribe
Step1
Choose Your Newsletter TopicThink about your readers: Are they customers? Clients? Potential customers or clients? If this is your first experience with newsletters, starting with a modest free newsletter is often your best bet. You can always expand with more detailed content later
Step2
Set Your Publication ScheduleAt the start, you will also need to decide how often to publish your newsletter ? daily, weekly, monthly, or at some other interval. You may want to start with a less-frequent schedule until you have ironed out all your publishing procedures and have determined the workload associated with putting out issues on time.
Step3
Collect and Maintain a List of E-Mail NamesOnce you have determined the model for your newsletter, you need to figure out how you will get people to sign up to receive it. In addition to getting readers to sign up, you will need to think about how to maintain your list over time. E-mail addresses can be especially volatile; you may have to update your list each time you send out your newsletter.
Step4
Write the NewsletterYou will want to put together a newsletter that you will be proud of and that will benefit your readers. You and your staff can write each issue, you can solicit contributions, or you can hire an agency to handle it for you. Determine what your objectives are and what resources you have to get the job done right.
Step5
Distribute the NewsletterMany of the products and services for collecting and maintaining e-mail addresses will also facilitate the delivery of your newsletter. Because of their built-in maintenance features, this is often the easiest method. Smaller lists can be delivered using your standard e-mail package. If you use this method, be sure to put the list of addressees in the "bcc" field so they wont be visible to every subscriber.
Step6
Sell and Manage E-Zine Advertising Space You can increase your revenues by selling advertising in your own e-mail publication. Advertisers are always looking for highly targeted e-mail newsletters or "e-zines" where they can promote their products.

Tips & Warnings

  • You SHOULD make your newsletter a great read! This is possibly the most important aspect of publishing a newsletter. Here are a few points to consider - try and make sure you: Add your personality; Publish on the same date; Stick to a similar format; Re-read and reread to remove mistakes; Encourage feedback; Have clear objectives and
  • meet them
  • ; and Enjoy yourself. But if nothing else, just keep it short! :-)
  • One last thing... don't forget SPAM filters......What does this mean to you, the budding newsletter publisher? Well, it means that you have to take great care now in what you write in your newsletter. If you don't, your publishing efforts will be wasted as the spam-filters will, wrongly, block your newsletter. And few of your subscribers will read it. So don't forget the spam filters when you write your newsletter! Do a check to see if you need to change any part of it, first, before you send your mailing out.
