For coach flights over eight hours, you'll want to make your travel experience as pleasant as possible. Here are a few tips that will make your long haul flight more pleasant.
Ask yourself these questions before you begin: What will you do to occupy your time in the air? Sleep? Read? Write articles for eHow? Most travelers try to get some shut eye on the flight so they arrive rested and somewhat adjusted to the time change. Readers and writers will bring smaller, packable supplies that are carry-on friendly.
Step2
Do some shopping: For sleeping, pick a sleep mask and ear plugs. You may want to bring some slipper socks too, for scooting to the galley for a snack, or walking around to increase circulation. Bring things like pocket-sized notebooks and thinner paperbacks for your reading and writing needs. This is not the trip to bust out a hard copy of War and Peace! Think light and practical.
Step3
Ziploc bags are a good friend to the carry on. Yes, you can pack the requisite toilet items as required by FAA, but use them also to pack healthful, low sodium snacks like raw almonds or dried cranberries. You can pack your own refresher kit by putting cleaning wipes, tissues, toothpaste and a brush for freshening up before you land.
Step4
Don't forget PJ's! Some folks don't mind strolling through the airport in their jammies, but for those of use who prefer stylish travel, it's wise to tuck some simple drawstring pants and a long sleeve T shirt for on board comfort. Enduring a fourteen hour flight to Tokyo while sleeping in tight jeans and boots is not only uncomfortable, but not great for you either. Loose cotton will allow for better circulation and better rest.
Step5
Lastly, in case of lost luggage, pack a simple change of clothing, necessary medications and all of your proper travel documents in your carry on. It can take a day or two for luggage to arrive; little steps like these make a big difference on a long trip!
Tips & Warnings
Pack thin pajamas on your long flight for better comfort and rest
Make sure your essentials travel with you and not your checked luggage
Of course, stay hydrated and stretch often on long haul flights
