How to Convert a DVD to an ISO File

When ripping a DVD to your computer hard drive with the intention of burning it to a new DVD, it is best to rip the DVD to an ISO (image) file.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with PC or MAC
  • DVD
  • DVDShrink
  • At least 5 gigabytes of free hard drive space
  • A DVD drive or burner
  1. Step 1

    Insert a DVD into your computer DVD drive or burner.

  2. Step 2

    Download a program called "DVDShrink". This program can only be downloaded via a search engine search using the words "DVD Shrink Download". Find a download location and download it onto your computer.

  3. Step 3

    Once you have download DVDShrink, start the program. After the program has loaded, click "Open Disc". Specify the DVD drive in the dialog that appears. Click "OK".

  4. Step 4

    If you wish to remove any menus or other options before continuing, select the button that says "ReAuthor Disc". Then de-select the check boxes next to any features you do not want to keep.

  5. Step 5

    After choosing your features, select "Edit" and then "Preferences". Set the disc to whatever values you would like. If you wish to keep the default DVD settings, skip this step.

  6. Step 6

    Select the "Backup" button. In the dialog that appears, click the output drop-down and select "Backup to ISO". Click "OK".

  7. Step 7

    After approx. 30 minutes, the writing box will disappear, This indicates that your DVD was successfully created. Close DVD Shrink.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to specify the output file so that you can later find the ISO file.
  • Know the copyright laws in your country. In the US, for example, it is illegal to copy any DVD, even if you own it.
