This article will save you a lot of money by teaching you to make homemade baby wipes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 roll of paper towel
  • 3 qt plastic container with lid
  • 1 tablespoon baby soap
  • 1 tablespoon mineral oil (baby oil)
  • 1 knife (or alternate cutting tool)
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 tablespoon
  • 1 butter knife
  • 1 pair of pliers
  1. Step 1

First, you will need to cut the paper towel roll in half, width-wise. It might help to leave the plastic on the roll, depending on what tool you use to cut. I use a large, sharp kitchen knife, but I have heard of others using a band or table saw. These might give you smoother edges.

  2. Step 2

Next, remove the cardboard center. I use a butter knife to loosen the paper towel from the edge of the cardboard and press the roll in on itself. Then, I grab the roll with pliers and work it out. You may use whatever tools and methods work best for you.

  3. Step 3

Now, you are ready to place the half roll of paper towel into your plastic container. Prepare the baby wipe solution by filling your measuring cup 3/4 full of water. Add 1 tablespoon of baby soap and 1 tablespoon of mineral oil. Stir the contents.

  4. Step 4

Pour the solution over the paper towel roll. Place the lid on the container. Now, wait for the paper towel to absorb the liquid.

  5. Step 5

When that dreaded time has arrived, remove the lid and pull a wipe from the inner portion of the roll. It should easily tear off and another will readily be available for those really messy changings.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a "greener" version of this project, use cut up pieces of old flannel sheets or other available and appropriate fabric in place of the paper towel.
  • Always keep mineral oil in a safe place, out of reach of children. If consumed, the oil will coat the lungs and may suffocate.

on 11/9/2008 LOVE THIS IDEA. SO EASY AND YOU CAN ALWAYS HAVE ON HAND. I USUALLLY HAVE BABY WIPES IN EVERY ROOM. EVEN THE BATHROOM WHEN YOU HAVE LITTLE ONES LEARNING TO USE THE POTTY AND THEY JUST CAN'T CLEAN WELL ENOUGH. AND SOMETIMES THEY ARE MUCH SOFTER THAT THE TOILET PAPER.
THEY ARE ALSO GOOD FOR A QUICK CLEAN UP IN THE BATHROOMS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS QUICK AND INEXPENSIVE IDEA. I KEEP THEM IN MY CAR TOO.

on 1/30/2008 I like to take baby wipes on long car trips for a quick refresher. How much nicer to have homemade ones! I wonder if almond-based massage oil would work instead of mineral oil, which is a petroleum product and not too healthy for human skin...
