It's easy to start up a collection, but where and how do you start? Especially about manga and anime, you have an intrest in it, it's just where to begin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A list of catagories that you like.
  • Know the types and ratings of some books and movies.
  • A computer with Internet to look up reviews.
  1. Step 1

First is to make a list of what type of categories you like in a book or movie. In manga and anime there are different types of categories, for example; romance, comedy, sci fi, fantasy, drama, action, **** (pornography), etc. It's always best to start off with something you are into, and then expand to other categories.

  2. Step 2

If you want to start off in a series (movies or books that come in volumes) go for the ones that are finished. The reason why is that some of the new series will either not make it to the end, kind of like a new television show being canceled and will not finished the first season. But there are ones that keep going on because of the population of the series.

  3. Step 3

If you want to know if a story is good, if you should buy the manga or anime version of a series, or you are picky with the art work (or some people I know being picky about the English dubbing) there are plenty of web sites for anime/manga reviews buy some critics and customers saying what they like about it, or what they didn't like.

One website I like where you order and purchase manga and anime is you can look any title of book or movie the website has and some will have reviews from people who already purchased the product. There are also web sites that let you download a series, some will charge, others will only let you watch it for free on their website but no downloading.

  4. Step 4

If going to a movie store or any place that sells only anime, don't be afraid to ask around like which series is good to watch. Get the worker's opinion. I was surprised when I went to a Suncoast and a girl that worked there told me its better off to read the manga of Fruit Basket than watch the anime version. Buy only the first volume and if it's something that you cannot get into, you can sell it back to stores that buy back used dvds.

  5. Step 5

When wanting to purchase a manga or more, it's better to go to a bookstore where you can read the manga right there; it will be in the same area where the graphic novels and comics are, than an anime/manga store. The reason why is at the anime/manga store, they won't let you read the book, so they leave the book in the plastic wrap it came in so in order for you to buy it with a chance of whether you are or not going to like that book.
These are some of the things when starting an anime/manga collection.

Tips & Warnings
  • In some bookstores like Borders or Barnes & Noble, you are allowed to read the books right there, but they too have some books in a plastic case or plastic wrapping indicating that the book is for mature readers because it contains strong violence or other kinds of content, so it's best to read the reviews of that book or series to see if you might have an interest for it.
  • There are some anime stores that have a rental for their anime, so take advantage of it. You can look through different anime and determine and decide which you like and want to add for your collection.
  • If you want to know what kinds I like or if I heard of a particular series, feel free to leave me a message.
  • Yes there are ratings for mangas and anime like for a movie. They are right on the back of the book (by the way on some traditional mangas, the back of the book would be the front of the book to us westerners), and dvd case or will have a parental advisory warning on the front. Just make sure to see if it's an appropriate rating if giving a manga or a anime to someone younger than 13.
