How many times have you tried to quit smoking only to find yourself back on the Butt wagon in less than three days? Surprise! If you had made it past day three research shows that quitting smoking becomes substantially easier after just three days of having no nicotine enter your system. Here I will tell you how to make it to day three and beyond.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Will power
  • A real desire to quit smoking
  • Stick shaped snacks such as pretzel sticks or licorice.
  • Several of your favorite scented candles or inscents
  • Febreeze
  • Chewing gum or hard candy

Step1
First thing is first, determine your quit day. I recommend no longer than three days from now. If you put it off too long you will never do it. Make sure any cigarettes you have now are smoked, thrown out, or given away before your Quit day. Also, hit the store to get the necessary items on the list before you start so you will not have any excuses.
Step2
The night before your Quit day approximately one hour before bed time do a smoke free sweep of your house. Throw out all ashtrays, butts, cigarette packaging, and vacuum up any spots on the floor that have ashes on them. Once everything is gone light your favorite scented candles, oils, or inscents. Spray Febreeze on carpets and upholstery. Once the sweep is done and your crib is smelling sweet hit the sack.
Step3
Your Quit day! The first is truly the worst. However, all of your preparations the night before will pay off when you wake up in a non-smokers home. That alone will help curb the desire to light up. Keep yourself occupied for day one and use those snacks! Munch on pretzel sticks or licorice sticks to help keep your hands and mouth occupied. Many Smokers do not realize that the habit of hand-to-mouth is just as addicting as the nicotine. Keep your place smelling great by using your candles and Febreeze often. Without the smell or the ashtrays lying around to remind you of smoking your first day will go off without a hinge.
Step4
When the times come (and they will) that you feel such a craving that you would kill for a drag off a cigarette. Do not be embarrassed to hold your Pretzel sticks as you would a cigarette. Heck, puff on one if you'd like, it really does help. Do this or any other hobby or chore that will keep your hands busy for at least twenty minutes. Dishes by hand are a great chore because no one wants a wet cigarette. The craving that you feel is very real caused by neurons firing like crazy in the brain in need of nicotine. So do not feel bad about it. It will go away after just twenty minutes. Just keep reminding yourself that it will only last 10 more minutes, 6 more minutes etc.
Step5
Over the three day period avoid situations where there will be smoking, cigarettes, or ashtrays in view. Tell your smoker family and friends you would prefer it if they did not visit during these crucial three days. After you have Quit never allow smoking in your house again.
Step6
The most important step, maintaining your success. Continue to follow these guidelines until you no longer strongly desire to smoke. Always keep your house and car clean and sweet smelling with no ashtrays anywhere, this will promote the feeling of a smoke free environment. Celebrate every hour you get past without smoking as if you had just won the Olympic Gold. When you notice how much easier it becomes to breathe congratulate yourself on your new longer healthier life. I will certainly congratulate you, because you are now a non-smoker!

Tips & Warnings

  • During the rough times keep a small bag of hard candy or gum in your purse or in the car so you have it on hand at all times.
  • If a stressful situation should come up remind yourself that if you can make it through this without smoking you can make it through anything.
  • Try and save at least half of the money you would have blown on cigarettes in a high yield savings account and watch it grow, or buy yourself a treat you never could have afforded before.
  • Enjoy the extra money any way you want, believe me you have more than earned it!

on 3/18/2008 I was a pack and a half a day smoker and quit smoking in one 30-minute treatment with laser therapy. I went to a company called Freedom Laser Therapy that provides a pain free low-level laser procedure which helps alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The staff at Freedom Laser Therapy is dedicated and passionate about helping smokers end their nicotine addiction.

I would really recommend laser therapy to help you quit smoking. Go to their locations page to find a Freedom Laser Therapy clinic or a local quit smoking laser therapy practionioner in your area. http://www.freedomlasertherapy.com

on 12/7/2007 I wanted to touch base and let you know that it has been four days for both of us with no cig. And to tell you the truth, I haven't wanted one. I have been wanting to really quit for some time, and I think it is 90% mentality (for me anyway). The tips you gave really helped! The first day, I actually caught myself puffing on a twizler. I feel so great now. My massage routine has improved, because it involves a great deal of breathing in conjuction with the client. And *blush* the sex is just amazing. We aren't out of breath, and needing to take a cig break so we go more rounds. Sorry if that was to much info, but maybe that will be inspiration for another freaky couple to quit ;0) thanx man

on 12/2/2007 That is great massagequeen! As an ex-smoker myself I know how hard it can be. Once you get past those first few days it gets a lot easier. Not to mention the hundreds of extra money every month is soo nice. Good luck to you and your husband, I hope you both kick the habit and add many more years to your lives. Thanks for the great comment.

on 11/19/2007 I had luck with the "after eating craving" by treating myself with a favorite piece of chocolate...or maybe two. Whatever it took!
