The most common garbage disposals are the small ones that are located under your kitchen sink. These units are fairly easy to remove and replace.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pliars
  • wire cutters
  1. Step 1

To remove your garbage disposal, first make sure the electricity is off that is going to it. Most of these units are 110w so there should only be 2 wires.

  2. Step 2

Next unhook the 2 wires going to your garbage disposal and place wire caps back on the raw wires.

  3. Step 3

There should be a drain coming out of the side. normally these are just connected with one nut. You should be able to get this off easily with a pair of pliers.

  4. Step 4

The last step in removing your garbage disposal is to unscrew the screws at the top. Most disposals have 3 to 4 screws. Once the pressure is off of these screws, your disposal should screw off fairly easily.

  5. Step 5

When installing your new disposal remember to wait until last to hook the electricity to it.

Tips & Warnings
  • make sure you cut off the power before unhooking the wires. Live wires can be dangerous.
