Reattach a Garbage Disposal to the Sink

The garbage disposal was invented in America in the 1920's and first sold to the American public in the 1930s. Most garbage disposals are installed under the kitchen sink and are connected by pipes to the drain above and the food trap below. Here is how to reattach a garbage disposal to your sink.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off the power to the circuit for the garbage disposal before beginning. If you are not sure how to turn off the electricity to the circuit for the garbage disposal you can turn off the circuit breaker or remove the fuse to disconnect the circuit.

  2. Step 2

Attach the mounting assembly to the sink flange (if a new one is needed) following the manufacturer's directions. When the mounting ring is placed over the flange then slide the snap ring onto the flange until it pops into the groove. Next, tighten the mounting screws with a screwdriver until the mounting assembly is tight against the sink.

  3. Step 3

Attach the discharge tube if it has been removed from the garbage disposal. And attach the drain hose from your dishwasher to the garbage disposals diswasher nipple.

  4. Step 4

Place the disposal under the mounting assembly and slide the tabs over the mounting tracks. Raise the disposal and insert it into the mounting assembly. Rotate the lower mounting ring until all mounting tabs lock over mounting ring. Use the screwdriver to tighten the ring.

  5. Step 5

Finally, rotate the disposal so that the discharge tube is aligned with the drain trap. And connect the discharge tube to the drain trap. Now the garbage disposal has been reattached to the sink. Turn on the electricity and reconnect the disposal by plugging in the cord. Great job!

Tips & Warnings
  • If there is not enough room to work under the sink you can remove one or both cabinet doors.
  • Do not begin until you are sure the power to the garbage disposal circuit is off.
