The first thing is to remember that this feeling WILL pass if you wait. It may pop up again and again... but it will pass again and again.

When these types of thoughts are overwhelming, tell yourself that they are chemical. Yes! The chemical/biological balances get off now and then and can help fuel these self destructive thoughts. So go to the drug store or health food store and ask for something natural to elevate your mood.

Avoid alcohol and other drugs. Buy a lottery ticket and wait long enough to see if you win. By then those thoughts should have past. If not, then go out and do something nice for someone else who needs it. Spend the time you are contemplating such thoughts doing something compassionate for someone else and you will see how very needed and worthwhile you are. But by all means... give it another day... and another day, and another. Get some help. It really is out there. Trust me, I 'know'. Get a pet if there is no one else you feel will miss you. My dog has helped me purge these thoughts because I worried that no one would care for him like me.
