Whether you are trimming your own hair or someone else’s, there are a number of steps involved when you trim bangs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cape or towel
  • Clips for sectioning hair
  • Comb
  • Mirror
  • Hair cutting shears
  1. Step 1

Put the cape or towel over your back and shoulders. If using a towel, you may want to use a hair clip to hold the towel together in the front.

  2. Step 2

Pull all of your hair back in a ponytail or clip so that you can focus on just the bangs.

  3. Step 3

Comb the bangs from roots to ends to remove any tangles.

  4. Step 4

Section hair if necessary with clips.

  5. Step 5

Take a small section of hair and use your first two fingers as a guide to smooth the hair. Bring the hair slightly away from your face and look in the mirror to make sure you have brought your fingers down to the appropriate spot.

  6. Step 6

Cut with the scissors, either straight across or with an upward snipping motion, depending on the style you are cutting.

  7. Step 7

Repeat with the remaining sections of hair.

  8. Step 8

    Style as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a good quality pair of sharp scissors designed for cutting hair. Your everyday scissors that cut coupons won’t do the job well.
  • If this is your first time trimming your hair, consider cutting your bangs slightly longer, then seeing if they need to be further trimmed.
  • Don’t wet your bangs prior to clipping. Wet hair hangs longer than when it’s dry, so you may find you cut your bangs too short when the hair dries.
