Many people have different reasons for wanting to redo their homes. Perhaps they are tired of the way it looks or they simply want to sell the property. Upgrading your home doesn't have to be as elaborate as the ones you see on television. Those shows are meant to show you the different ways how a home can be upgraded. There are many other ways to add value to any piece of property.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Do a basic remodel of bathroom. Many people completely upgrade their bathroom. However, in the process of doing so, they spend upwards to $25,000 dollars. You don't have to spend this much to get the bathroom looking good. A simple makeover will suffice and will be less expensive. If your home has more than one bathroom, then saving money will more in mind. Ripping down outdated wallpaper and replacing it with fresh paint and borders. Have a professional install tiles or you can do this yourself and save money. While you're at it, go ahead and replace the wall and faucet fixtures. Chances are if there was wallpaper on the walls, then these fixtures are also outdated. A quick stop at Home Depot or Lowes will do the trick needed to upgrade your home. When painting the walls, try to pick a color that's soothing such as a soft blue or a calming tan.
Step2
Get a professional to do the landscaping surrounding your home. This is one of the most underrated and overlooked places your home can be improved on. The surrounding areas around your house needs to show that you cared for the home. It also reflects what the house looks like on the inside. Curb appeal is what many home buyers are seeking if you're trying to sell your home. Make sure that the yard is mowed, the hedges are trimmed, and the edging is done. Make sure to also get rid of unsightly grass that may poke through cracks in the driveway. Plant a small tree to give the yard more substance. You can put pine bark or pine straw around existing trees to give it more of an appealing look and add value. Surround flower beds with stones or mulch to bring out the flowers. If there's a bare spot on the lawn, consider covering it up with the same materials. Shrubbery can be planted to fill open spaces next to the house. Be creative yet be sensible. There's a point where the yard may have too much going on.
Step3
Remodel the kitchen. One look at the home & Garden channel on television and you'll see just how important a great kitchen can boost value in a home. There are many ways you can go about upgrading the look and feel of your kitchen. Replacing the counter top and installing new cabinets can be a big help however, this can be expensive. It would be better if you have the cabinets resurfaced instead. While you're at it, go ahead and replace the doors also. The stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher can also be upgraded to look modern. Look into purchasing energy efficient appliances. This will help to lower the electricity bill. This will give the kitchen a whole new persona without denting your pockets.
Step4
Take time out to paint the interior and exterior. This is the cheapest way to upgrade a home. Consider replacing the wood outside your home with vinyl siding. This will not only give your home a new look but will keep you from painting it every year (or two.) Repaint the hallways and stairwells to cover up unsightly smudges. When repainting any room, if you paint the baseboards and trim around the doors, you will give the room a fresh look. Think about adding a border in the bedrooms to accent the paint if you're simply upgrading the look of your house. However, stick to simple colors if you plan on reselling your home.
Step5
Build, refurbish, or expand a deck. This is one of the most affordable way to upgrade your home. It will not only give your backyard a fresh look but now you'll have a place to relax or host cook outs. Look into other building material besides wood if you have the extra money but stick to your budget. A good looking deck will last for years and will prove to be a favorite spot for visitors, especially if the backyard is shaded.
