Topical medications come in a wide variety of types. From balms and creams to ointments and sprays, topical medications encompass any medication which gets applied to the surface of the skin. If you have a condition which requires the application of a topical medication, then here is how you should apply it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Topical medication
  • Soap
  • Clean, dry towel

Step1
Before applying any topical medication, you should gently wash the affected area of your skin with warm water and soap. Once you finish washing the area, pat it dry with a clean towel.
Step2
Wash your hands with warm water and soap and dry them thoroughly with a clean towel. This helps prevent germs and dirt from your fingers getting to the affected area.
Step3
If your topical medication is a spray, make sure you shake the can before applying. Follow the directions listed on the medication as to how far from the skin you should hold the nozzle. Apply the medication as directed and be careful not to inhale or get any in your eyes.
Step4
Lotions should also be shaken before applied. Creams and ointments do not need to be shaken. Squeeze a small amount of medication onto your fingers and gently rub it on the affected area.

Again, the directions should detail how much medication should be used. It may suggest a "dime-sized" amount or some other easily recognizable amount.
Step5
Once the medication is applied, do not cover the area with gauze or cloth unless specified by your doctor. Immediately replace the cap on the medication and thoroughly wash and dry your hands.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only use the prescribed amount of topical medication, or if it is an over-the-counter medicine, follow the recommended directions.
  • Do not use more medicine than prescribed or directed. Over applying topical medication can sometimes result in an overdose.
  • Avoid touching your fingers to your eyes after applying the medication.
  • Never inhale or ingest topical medications.
