For African Americans with natural hair, styling hair in two-strand twists is easy to do and maintain. This style is protective and gentle on fragile hair. With a little practice, anyone can create this style on her own.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wide tooth comb
  • Rat-tail comb
  • Hair clips or pins
  • Styling product of your choice
  • Spray bottle containing water (optional)
  1. Step 1

Shampoo and condition hair with moisturizing products. Dry hair by squeezing with a towel; do not rub dry.

  2. Step 2

Section hair into four equal parts with rat-tail comb. Start at a back section of hair while using clips or hairpins to hold other sections out of the way.

  3. Step 3

Separate a section of hair about one inch wide and comb through with wide tooth comb. Divide this section into two. Apply styling product sparingly and then twist the sections around each other all the way to the end.

  4. Step 4

Pay attention to apply product to the ends of the hair, which are usually the dryest areas.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps three and four over entire head.

Tips & Warnings
  • A styling product with natural oils in it softens African American hair well.
  • For people who don't want to use oil in their hair, gel will work.
  • If hair becomes too dry during styling, wet with water.
  • Depending on thickness and texture of the hair, two strand twists can be created on wet or damp hair.
  • Thick natural hair is easier to comb through when wet.
  • For bigger twists, make individual sections larger; for smaller twists, make individual sections smaller.
  • Don't use gels or other products that are too sticky or heavy.
