Things You'll Need:
- WoW Account
- Mage
-
Step 1
First, you should commit yourself to Frostbolt. Make it your best friend. More than half of your spell casting should involve Frostbolt. If you don’t like Frostbolt, try another talent set altogether.
-
Step 2
Now that you’ve promised to use Frostbolt as much as possible, make it worthwhile! By level 70, you should have 5 points in Improved Frostbolt, reducing the casting time of the spell by 0.5 seconds. You should also have three points into Piercing Ice, increasing the damage done by your Frost spells by 6%. Make sure you put five points into Arctic Winds, increasing Frost damage by 5% and reducing the chance melee and ranged attacks will hit you by 5% Then put five points into Empowered Frostbolt, which gives you an additional 10% of your bonus spell damage and an additional 5% chance to critically strike.
-
Step 3
Now that your Frostbolt is doing some damage, let’s consider the next step: critical strikes. As a Frost mage, you will see a significant amount of damage come from your critical strikes, so it’s best to give yourself as much chance of that as possible! Aside from picking up items that boost your crit chance, also invest five points into Ice Shards, which increases the crit strike damage of your Frost spells by 100%. Nice, huh? Next, put five points into Shatter, increasing the critical strike chance of all your spells against frozen targets by 50%. 50! Every time you cast against a frozen target, you have a 50/50 chance of getting a critical strike. Isn’t it beautiful?
-
Step 4
So, how do you get things frozen? Simple. Start by putting three points into Frostbite, which gives your chill effects a 15% chance to freeze the target for 5 seconds. Then, put two points into Improved Frost Nova, which reduces the cooldown of your Frost Nova spell by four seconds, so that you can freeze things more often. Next, put two points into Arctic Reach. This talent increases the range of your Frostbolt and Blizzard spells, as well as the radius of your Frost Nova and Cone of Cold by 20%. That means you can freeze things further away (and keep them there!) Then we come to Winter’s Chill (five points), which gives your Frost damage spells a 100% chance to apply a chill effect, which increases the chance of a Frost spell critically hitting by 2% for 15 seconds. It also stacks up to five times! Something else you will want is Improved Cone of Cold. An instant spell, this talent increases the damage dealt by 35% Against a frozen target, it is amazing.
-
Step 5
Freezing the bad guys is only one part of controlling them. Of course, we all know about sheeping, but there are a few Frost talents to consider as well. If you put five points into Permafrost, you increase the duration of your chill effects by 3 seconds and reduce the target’s speed by an additional 10% When combined with Winter’s Chill, this means every target is slowed drastically, giving you more time to cast and kill. You also want to put one point into Cold Snap, which finishes the cooldown of all your Frost spells. This is extremely helpful when you need to protect yourself.
-
Step 6
So, how does a cloth-wearing squishy protect themselves? Frost mages have it easy! With one point in Ice Block, you can encase yourself in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for ten seconds. One point into Ice Barrier will instantly shield you, absorbing 977 damage and lasts for one minute. It also protects you from the creatures interrupting your spells. Putting two points into Ice Floes reduces the cooldown of such spells and three points in Frozen Core reduces the damage you take by Frost and Fire effects by a full 6%
-
Step 7
So where does a mage get all the mana for this? Thankfully, there are two talents to help with that. Three points in Elemental Precision will reduce the mana cost and chance targets resist your Frost and Fire spells by 3% Also, three points into Frost Channeling will reduce the mana cost of your Frost spells by 15% and reduce the threat caused by your Frost spells by 10%
-
Step 8
The final skill selection for Frost mages sums up exactly what they are all about. By pointing on point into Summon Water Elemental, you will get a water elemental to fight for you for 45 seconds. It has two spells, similar to your Frostbolt and Cone of Cold. The best part: their freezing ability can be cast from a distance and you don’t have to get close at all. For less than 500 mana, this Water Elemental will help you deal damage, get critical strikes and control the creature. What more could you ask for?

on 5/26/2009 This information is a bit dated, and does not include the most recent talent trees for mages.Rather than just look at 'Frost' spec, decide what you want to do: PVE or PVP.Then go to Archmagus (http://mage.best-free-information.com), and look for either the PVP or the PVE spec posts.
