Don't bother going to the store and spend hundreds of dollars in a new wardrobe. I was watching one of Rachael Ray segments. How to alter the wardrobe you have in your closet and save, plenty of money in doing so.

In the segment, it included a family of four sisters including the mom with a tight budget and wearing hand me downs. Clothes that are worn from mother to oldest daughter past it on to the third sister, then its past to the second, and so forth. Imagine having the same humdrum clothes and out dated, especially with fashion styles changing the way it does.

In the case of the sisters, they had to pick out the outfits that they really hate.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Look inside your closet or drawers, any out dated clothes you have.
  1. Step 1

Outdated: Plain black dress just above the knee with spaghetti strings.
Updated: Diamond shape jewels were either glue or patched between the busts of the dress. It gave a little elegance to the dress. It did not look so plain after all. A patch with decorative jewels was iron on to the dress.

  2. Step 2

Outdated: Pair of regular dark blue jeans.
Updated: A sparkling skull patch was iron onto the back pocket of the jean. A very cool look.

  3. Step 3

    Outdated: Red short sleeve tee
Updated: Letters spelling the word love was iron onto the shirt. Cute

  4. Step 4

Outdated: Plain pink knitted long sleeve sweater.
Updated: Few jewels were either glue or patched on or around the shoulders to the front of the sweater, and on the hem of the sweater, a sequin was glue or stitched. The sequin material came from their mothers’ dress, which they cut carefully. Very nice.

  5. Step 5

    Outdated: White sleeveless sweater
Updated: Faux fur was either stitch or glue onto the collar and around the sleeves. Very hip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look in your closet and see what you can spruce up. If you are unable, to alter your clothes and do not have enough accessories try shopping at rag shops, craft stores, and/or thrift shops for your accessories.

on 1/31/2008 I think that those ideas are more suitable for teens and children than adults.

on 10/14/2007 When altering clothes, you need to also think about where and how often you would wear those clothes. Instead of glueing jewels on the back dress, I suggest:
1) finding a jeweled pin, 2) finding a cashmere shrug, 3) finding a 3/4 length sequined jacket, and finally, creating an old fashioned black lace collor.
