Apply a colored filter that simulates the effect of a colored lens filter on a camera.

Adobe Photoshop added the Filter Gallery with the first CS, or Creative Suite, version in 2003. The basic structure of the Filter Gallery hasn't changed in subsequent CS releases. Add subtle color effects to a digital photograph using the powerful Filter Gallery feature in Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Photoshop CS2. Open the digital image to which you want to add a colored filter. Left-click on the Layer menu from the menu bar across the top of the screen. Choose "New Adjustment Layer" from the item list that drops down. Choose "Photo Filter" from the submenu that appears.

    • 2

Select "Filter" from the choices given. Choose from among the preset filter options as desired. For example, choose the Warming Filter (LBA) to add warm tones including yellows, oranges, browns and reds. Choose the Cooling Filter (LBB) to add cool tones like blues, greens, pinks and purples. There are many other filter options. Alternatively, select "Color" to choose your own custom filter color. Click on the color swatch and choose your desired color from the color chart that appears.

    • 3

Click and drag to move the "Density" to your desired color balance. Make sure the "Preview" box is checked so you can see the changes on your image on the fly.

    • 4

To preserve the brightness of your original image, check "Preserve Luminosity." Uncheck this option to darken the image.

    • 5

Click "OK" when the previewed image looks as you want it to.

    • 6

Click on the "Background" layer in the Layers palette. Click on the Image menu from the menu bar across the top of the screen. Choose "Adjustments" from the drop-down list that appears. Choose "Desaturate."

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose another color by double-clicking the Adjustment Layer in the Layers palette, and tone a monochrome image in one step.
