If you'd rather not go to the salon for your child's first haircut, be assured that you can easily trim a baby's hair in the comfort of your own home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cape or towel
  • Water bottle
  • Comb
  • Hair scissors
  • Keepsake envelope or zippered storage bag
  1. Step 1

Select a time of day when your baby is most agreeable for having a haircut. Whether this is first thing in the morning or later in the day, make sure you avoid giving a haircut when your baby is fussy.

  2. Step 2

Seat your child in a high chair or booster seat and drape a cape or towel over his shoulders. If you don't have a seat, have a friend or family member hold your child in her lap. You may also consider toys or a DVD to distract him during the haircut.

  3. Step 3

Spray the water gently on her hair. If your child doesn't enjoy the spraying water, simply wet the comb under a faucet or spray the comb with the water bottle.

  4. Step 4

Comb the hair to remove any tangles. To trim the bangs, take a section of hair between two fingers, running the fingers down to the point where you would like to cut. The fingers act as a guide so that you can make a straight cut across. Continue this process with the next section of hair.

  5. Step 5

Talk to your child to provide gentle encouragement and positive reinforcement during the haircut.

  6. Step 6

Trim the hair at the back and sides of the head by using the process outlined in step 4, taking sections of wet hair and running your fingers down to guide the cutting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Babies are unpredictable when it comes to haircuts, so follow your child's cues while you are trimming his hair. If he becomes fidgety, it's best to stop the cutting for the day, otherwise you may end up with poor results or an unhappy baby.
  • Don't forget to save a clipping of your child's hair for a baby book or scrapbook. A sample of those first locks is all too precious.
  • Use caution with scissors around your child. Any sudden movements could result in a cut to his face, head or neck. It may help to have someone available to spot your child and provide distractions while you're cutting.
