Ventrilo is a Voice-over IP (VoIP) communications software product. Many online gamers use Ventrilo to communicate with other online gamers while playing. The interface is simple enough that users can learn how to use Ventrilo's features quickly. Below are basic features you can customize once you have set up your Ventrilo software.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ventrilo software
  • Microphone
  • Headphones or speakers
Step1
Open the Ventrilo software and select the arrow key by your user name. In the Setup window, enter the phonetic sound of your name in the "Phonetic field." Press the Play button to hear the sound. Select "OK" when finished.
Step2
Open the setup window by using the "Setup" button. This window contains a lot of the features you are going to want to manipulate.
Step3
Adjust your server settings. Join a server and highlight your user name. Right click to bring up a menu. Select "Change state" to allow or disable incoming pages from other users, user-to-user communications and recording of your conversations.
Step4
Normalize the sound. Check "Direct sound" in the "Voice" screen and press the "SFX" button. Select the compressor by clicking to highlight it and press the "Add" button. The compressor changes sound based on the values you set. Adjust the following properties based on what you want for each: "Threshold" to set the point when the compressor begins to change the sound properties, "Gain" for how loud you want others to be, "Attack" to change the rate of volume change and "Release" for the rate it takes the compressor stop changing sounds. Adjust the ratio to determine how much any sound can get modified. Pre-delay should be set to the highest to give the compressor a few milliseconds to determine how much modification is needed.
Step5
Check the "Use-Push-To-Talk" hotkey in the "Voice" screen to select this feature. "Push-To-Talk" only allows your sound to go to the Ventrilo server when you have the hot-key pressed. You can select the hotkey you wish to use by clicking on the field next to hot-key and pressing the key.
Step6
Go to the "Events" tab. Change the notifications for different events based on what you want to hear. As en example, change your switching channels from a wave file to "text-to-speech."
Step7
Experiment on your own with more advanced features and play with the features above until you are comfortable with your Ventrilo settings.
