How to Make Ductwork

Ductwork is part of your home heating and cooling system. It is run through an entire house or building and is designed to deliver hot or cool air from your heating and air-conditioning units. Properly crafted ductwork is essential to making a heating and cooling system work properly. Here's now to make ductwork.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the plans and specifications for the project to determine what type and quality of materials you will need.

    • 2

Find a good software program that gives you a variety of ductwork fitting patterns. Software programs are available for most standard ductwork pieces. Using this kind of program will cut down on prep time and waste.

    • 3

Select the desired fitting from the ductwork software library and enter the dimensions for the desired part. Print out a measured drawing.

    • 4

Determine the gauge of sheet metal you will need for the ductwork system. Use the best quality for the job at the lowest price.

    • 5

Use a beading machine to reinforce sheet metal. This helps inhibit vibrations in finished ductwork systems.

    • 6

Lay sheet metal flat on the sheet metal cutter and begin cutting the pieces for the fittings from the measured drawing.

    • 7

Use a ductwork machine to notch vees and corners, form a variety of seams and joints, and roll and fold ductwork into industry-standard pieces.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are many pre-formed ductwork pieces that can be purchased from home supply stores for small DIY projects.

  • Ductwork that meets or exceeds industry standards is a true art form. If you feel it's too challenging, ductwork for a heating and air conditioning system should only be installed by trained professionals.
