When you begin a pursuit of precious collectibles, beware of the many frauds and fakes out there. Collectors are a breed who are very aware of the origin of their collectibles. To become credible, you must take the time to learn about what is valuable and what is not. Here's how to buy foreign figurines.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Collect figurines that you enjoy looking at and agree with your tastes. Collecting something that you abhor just because it is valuable will not enhance your life.

  2. Step 2

Read up on the various levels of certain figurine collection. Though they may be from the same artist, not all of a particular artisan's collection holds the same value.

  3. Step 3

Know your source. When buying foreign figurines online or from a catalog, make sure that you trust the seller. Pictures and details can be copies and you could easily fall prey to a scheme. Buy your collectible figurines from the same source whenever possible.

  4. Step 4

Visit the artisan's workshop to get a feel for the level of work you want to collect. Spend some of your time abroad visiting the places where your figurines are made. This visit will also assure you that you are not buying a manufactured replica. In most cases today, you can get direct-ordering information directly from the artist.

  5. Step 5

Insure valuable figurines you order through the mail. Since most figurines are made of clay or glass, they are easily cracked and broken in shipping.
