How to Referee a Flag Football Game

Refereeing a flag football game can be difficult if you do not understand the proper procedures. The game of flag football is quite different from other forms of football. As a referee, you need to understand these differences in order to be successful.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the flag football league's rule book to learn all the aspects of what makes flag football different than other forms of football. If you have any questions, the best person to ask is a veteran flag football referee. Once you step on the flag football field, you should be totally confident that you understand the nuances of the game.

    • 2

Greet the players and coaches before the games. If there are any new rules or regulations, explain them to the players and coaches, and allow the players and coaches to ask questions. Being friendly before the game can help you have a better relationship with the players and coaches throughout the course of the game.

    • 3

Speak with the other referees on the field if there is a disputed call. The bottom line when it comes to refereeing is you want to get the calls right. If you feel a call may not be right, don't be afraid to huddle with the other referees so that you can help each other out.

    • 4

Study the rule book after the game to make sure you made the correct calls. There is a big difference between reading about it and actually refereeing. Once you are on the field of play, you may notice situations that you hadn't thought about before, so check the rule book to make sure that you make the right calls. As a referee, you should always try to be improving.
