How to Camp Without Gear

If you are a hardcore trekker and are tired of carrying a load of camping gear, you can limit your load and camp by leaving some of the standard equipment behind. You are probably already accustomed to a bit of discomfort, but carrying less of a load can make hiking easier. So, the next time you head out into the wilderness, leave your traditional gear at home, and try these alternative ideas to camp lightly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Bring a tarp instead of a tent and set up a lean-to for sleeping. A tarp is sufficient to protect yourself from the elements and you can use it to wrap your gear in your pack for waterproofing. A tarp is sturdy, lightweight and takes up very little space, which makes it much more convenient than a tent. Be sure to carry sturdy string to secure your lean-to in place, but you can find strong branches or sticks along the way to use as stakes.
Step2
Pack a butane lighter or a small flint and striker kit for building fires. Build your fire before the sun goes down so you have light in your camp when it gets dark. If you build your fire with enough daylight remaining, you will not need to carry a flashlight.
Step3
Carry a collapsible fishing rod and real with a set of lures for fishing instead of bringing a lot of food. To avoid carrying heavy bottles, pack a lightweight pot to boil water on the fire. It is a good idea to bring a small water bottle that you can refill each night. Bring lightweight but healthy and nutrient-rich trail mix, which you can supplement with nuts and berries you find along the way and the fish you catch.
Step4
Choose two changes of clothing and nothing more. You only need the clothes on your back and an extra set to change into if you happen to get wet. Keep your extra set of clothing wrapped in the tarp when packed, and safely under your lean-to at night to keep dry. One pair of waterproof boots should be sufficient; however, extra socks never hurt.
Step5
Bring a friend, as they are the best and the most indispensable gear you can bring camping. While it may seem romantic to brave the wide wilderness alone, a friend can save your life and help you share the adventure.
