Mac OS X Mail toolbars come with preset icons and settings that you can customize. Whether you want to add or remove icons or hide your toolbars completely, your new Mac OS X Mail settings are just a few clicks away.

From Quick Guide: The Power of Mac OS
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Reorganize, add and remove icons in your Mac OS X Mail toolbar. Select "View" and click "Customize Toolbar" from the menu bar. From this window, drag new icons to the toolbar or remove old unused icons. Once you have all the icons you want on your toolbar, rearrange them. Click "Done" to save your changes.

  2. Step 2

Save screen space by streamlining your Mac OS X Mail toolbar and removing the icons all together. Hold the control key while clicking on the toolbar. Select "Text Only" from the menu. The icons disappear and will be replaced with text.

  3. Step 3

Hide your toolbar while you are working for added screen space. Click the button on the top right corner of the window. When you are ready to view your toolbar again, click the button and the toolbar will appear.

  4. Step 4

Customize the toolbars for "Mail Viewer," "Compose" and the "Message Window" by opening the window of the toolbar you want to change and following these same directions. Because you have a window open, the Mac OS X Mail program applies the changes to the toolbar that belongs to that window.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you change your toolbar settings to "Text Only," you can no longer access the "Search Mailbox" toolbar item.
  • Always click "Done" after making your changes, or they will not be applied.
