How to Change a Router SSID

In the Internet world, hackers continually search for vulnerable networks that are open for exploitation. Network security is a network administrator's number one priority. Changing a wireless router default Service Set Identifier, or SSID, can protect a network from attackers.

1. Access the wireless router administrator's console to change the default SSID. Check the router user's manual if you need to determine where to access the administrator's area. Typically, the access area can be located with a web browser.
2. Open a web browser. Type the default IP address for your wireless router into the URL address bar (a typical IP address is: http://192.168.1.1). IP addresses can vary depending on the vendor. An administrator logon screen displays.
3. Enter your administrator username and password into the dialogue box. Click "OK." The administrator console displays for the wireless router.
4. Locate the wireless settings area of the console. Find the existing network name or wireless SSID.
5. Create a unique identifier to keep hackers from discovering your SSID. Use both letters and numbers in the new network name. Keep from using your name in the SSID. Consider making the new wireless SSID easy to remember. A lengthy mix of odd characters can be difficult for an administrator to recall.
6. Change the SSID in the network name field to your new identifier name.
7. Save the settings to complete the change of the wireless router SSID. The new settings have been activated.

• Beware of using the default router username and password. Hackers can easily find the default logon information from the vendor.
