Step 1
Contact a wheelchair basketball league in your area and ask what is needed to referee in their league. The qualifications needed vary. However, the league can tell you the application process for the referee.
-
Step 2
Consider going to a basketball referee school. One of the best basketball referee schools in the country is The Coast To Coast Referee School (see Resources below). This school is run by former and current NBA referees and has been in business for a number of years. Coast to Coast holds yearly camps that help train all types of basketball refs, from NBA referees to wheelchair basketball referees. By attending one of these referee camps, you can improve your craft and have an added bonus for your referee application.

Step 3
Apply to become a referee with the wheelchair basketball league. Oftentimes, you need to have some sort of certification or training before applying. It is sometimes as simple as taking a referee course that lasts just a few hours.

Step 4
Officiate the games as you normally would. While these athletes may be handicapped to a degree, they are still in need of quality officiating. Don't be afraid to be stern when you need to make a point. Basically, pay no attention to the wheelchairs, and ref how you would ref any other basketball game.
