Step 1
Rent. If you are new to the sport of jet skiing, rent prior to buying. By renting, you can see if you use the skis enough to warrant a purchase. Renting may turn out to be the way to go if you don't use the skis frequently.
-
Step 2
Consider safety. Lanyards are standard equipment on jet skis. This important safety feature will automatically turn the ski off if the driver falls off or the watercraft flips. Older model jet skis may not have a lanyard; make sure the one you decide to purchase does. A ski that keeps running once your flipped can injure or even kill you.
-
Step 3
Decide what size jet ski you want to purchase before you begin your search. Jet skis are available for 1 to 4 riders. If you buy used, most older models can accommodate no more than 3 riders.
-
Step 4
Determine if you can store and tow the watercraft. A jet ski is best stored indoors, such as in a garage or shed. A vehicle with ample towing power and a towing package is necessary for moving a jet ski from one location to another.
-
Step 5
Insure the watercraft before using it. Insurance for the jet ski may also include insurance for the rider. If it doesn't, ask your insurance provider if an injury sustained on a jet ski is covered. Never use a jet ski without insurance coverage.
