How to Clean a Deep Freezer

Cleaning the deep freezer maintains a safe food environment and fresh smell. The time to complete the job depends on size and amount of food transferred during cleaning. No special cleaning fluids are needed, just regular household items.

• Temporary food storage
• Towels
• Washcloths
• Dishwashing liquid
• Water
• Bucket
• Baking soda
• Vacuum
• Chlorine bleach

Instructions

Clean Inside Freezer

1. Follow the manufacturer's manual for additional procedures and to see if your deep freezer needs defrosting before cleaning.

2. Turn electrical controls off and unplug the freezer.

3. Remove any frozen foods into an ice cooler or refrigerator freezer.

4. Allow any inside ice buildup to thaw and remove excess water from the bottom. Use towels to absorb the water and wring them out in a bucket.

5. Use a washcloth to wash the inside and trays with dishwashing liquid and water. Use a bucket to mix the solution. Scrub away bits of food and grime stuck on the lid, trays and along the seal well.

6. Add 2 tbsp. of baking soda to 1 qt. warm water for a final wash down.

7. Wipe dry the interior and trays.

Clean Outside of Freezer

1. Wipe outside lid and sides of the deep freezer with a fresh dish washing soap and water mixture.

2. Dry with a towel.

3. Vacuum underneath the freezer by pulling it away from the wall.

4. Reposition the deep freezer.

5. Plug the power cord into the wall socket and turn on the power control.

6. Wait until the freezer's temperature drops enough to replace your food.

Tips & Warnings

• For strong odors add more baking soda to water and rewash or mix 3/4 cup chlorine bleach with a gallon of warm water. Take extra care and wear gloves when handling bleach.

• Consider washing the freezer trays and baskets in a sink if room permits.
