A cowlick is a small tuft of hair that is continuously unruly. Most people are born with these cowlicks, which occur typically around the crown of the head or along the front of the face at the hairline. If you have a cowlick, you know exactly what one is and how much of a pain cowlicks can be. If you are looking for a way to tame that cowlick, the following steps will help you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair stylist
  • Perm or a chemical-relaxing hair treatment
  • Hair products
  • Blow dryer
  1. Step 1

Consult with your hair stylist to see if she can reduce the problem cowlick with a haircut. Sometimes hair stylists can add weight from the rest of the hair to hold it down or customize the cut of the hair to make it go in a certain direction to minimize the look of it. If you have a cowlick that sticks out in the back at the nape of your neck, keep it cut short in that area.

  2. Step 2

Get a perm or a chemical-relaxing hair treatment from your hair salon to tame the cowlick.

  3. Step 3

Use a hair cream, gel, grease or pomade to work out the cowlick. Apply the product of your choosing to the root area around the cowlick and work it out the way you want it to lie.

  4. Step 4

Use a blow dryer with your styling product to straighten out cowlicks. Brush the hair in the direction you want it to go as you blow it dry on a hot setting. Keep the blow dryer nozzle pointed downward and blow it out from the cuticle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Permanently rid yourself of your cowlick by obtaining electrolysis or plastic surgery. You can also have it waxed to temporarily get rid of it.
  • Do not use too much styling product to tame the cowlick, or you may give it a wet or stiff look, which may end up drawing more attention to it.
