1
Find a charter boat that suits your needs. You can search the Internet or seek recommendations from those whom you trust. Professional charters are easy to spot because they have certified captains and information to hand out that prepares you for your trip.
-
2
Talk to the captain of the charter fishing boat and decide whether a full-day offshore fishing trip is the one that offers the best opportunity to catch a shark. Other trips are available, such as all-day inshore and half days in the mornings and afternoons. Most fisherman choose the full-day offshore; the water is rougher, but the chances of catching a shark are much better.

3
Reserve your charter fishing trip with the boat and captain of your choice. A deposit must be made to hold your spot for that trip. The best way to pay is with a credit card, or send a check by mail right away.
-
4
Organize how you will arrive to the dock on time. Being late is not permitted because you will miss your launch, and you will lose your deposit. If you plan to travel some distance to get to the dock, the smart thing to do is arrive the day before the fishing trip. Make sure, you call your captain to confirm your departure time and weather conditions. In New York during the later months of the season, the weather can be foul.

5
Prepare your food and drinks in a sturdy ice chest. Bring boots and bad weather gear, particularly in the spring and fall. Dress causal with loose-fitting clothes. Don't forget sunglasses, hat and sunscreen. Make sure you bring a camera for those picture-perfect moments like the biggest catch of the day.

Tips & Warnings
Montauk draws shark fisherman 20 to 30 miles from Montauk point. This distance requires a fast boat so that plenty of time is available to catch fish.
Some days are poor days to fish for shark, no matter where you decide to fish in the ocean. If it was easy, it would be called catching fish, not fishing.
Blue, mako and thresher are the sharks on the coast of Montauk, New York. Blue is more prevalent than the others. This area is a melting pot, so don't be surprised if you catch other types of shark.
Browns, dusky and hammerheads have all been found around Montauk, yet for the most part these are more rare.
Contact Captain Matthew Miller for a shark-fishing adventure off Montauk Bay (see Resources below).
Brooklyn, New York, is another great dock to cast off from and go 30 miles out for shark. Captain Donald Lundt of New York Saltwater Charters (see Resources) will cast you off on an all-day adventure of fishing for blues, a popular shark.
