Step 1
Spend some time building and testing your decks. Some tournaments will let you play with your own decks, while others may be played with tournament decks that you don't have access to before the event. Either way, building and practicing with your own decks will improve your game as well as result in stronger decks.

Step 2
Get involved locally. Find out when there are tournaments in your area at game shops, comic book stores or anywhere else. These do not have to be official tournaments from Wizards of the Coast. Rather it can be just something to get your feet wet. This will help you know if you are cut out to move on to more professional tournaments and will help you learn some strategy on playing against other tournament players.
-
Step 3
Learn tournament rules. There are several different types of Magic tournaments, such as Constructed, Limited and Two-Headed Giant formats. You can find rules for the different types of tournaments on the DCI homepage on the Wizards of the Coast website.
-
Step 4
Compete in a Pro Tour Qualifier event. Pro Tour Qualifiers will give you an opportunity to compete on the Pro Tour if you win the tournament and it will help you start racking up Pro Points that will take you to professional status. You can find dates for Pro Tour Qualifiers on the Wizards of the Coast website.
-
Step 5
Play in a Grand Prix event. Grand Prix are the largest tournament events held for Magic: The Gathering. The top 16 places at a Grand Prix get invited to the Pro Tour and there are cash prizes for the top 64 finishers. Find when Grand Prix events are being held on the Wizards of the Coast site.
-
Step 6
Be persistent and play in as many tournaments as possible. Even if you are not a top finisher, you can still rack up Pro Points that can get you to professional status and eventually a spot on the Pro Tour. The key is you have to show up and play.
