If you plan to become an airline reservation agent, there are a few things you need to know. Although a fairly easy process, prepare to encounter competition when applying for these jobs. The travel perks however, are enough incentive to make the effort.

Step1
Have a high school diploma or equivalent before applying for a job as an airline reservation agent. Because of stiff competition, previous travel industry or customer service experience is a big plus, and might give you the edge over other applicants.
Step2
Familiarize yourself with computers and brush up on your typing skills before starting a job hunt. Tests are routinely given to check ability in these areas.
Step3
Apply at all of the major airlines. Start with local ones first, unless you want to relocate. Check out their websites for downloadable employment applications and instructions. Carefully follow the guidelines and provide complete information.
Step4
Prepare to attend several weeks of formal company training when hired. This is to educate you on the use of company computer programs. Flight schedules, airline codes, passenger ticketing, and seating is taught as well as plane configuration and safety. Upon completion of these classes, you must pass certain tests to enter the workforce.
Step5
Work with customers under the guidance of senior agents for several weeks before being on your own. This allows you to build confidence and gain knowledge of different situations that arise. Use the expertise of the supervisors at this time. Ask any questions you think pertinent to do the job well.
Step6
Prepare for downsides to the airline reservation agent job. Angry or rude customers are not uncommon and you have to handle them with politeness and poise. The job can be repetitive and stressful.
